The Yamaha MusicCast 20 is a wireless multi-room speaker. Buy several speakers from the MusicCast line-up and you can turn them into a stereo pair or a surround sound setup. The Yamaha MusicCast 20 is not the best-sounding speaker in its class, though.

Related: Best wireless speakers. Having heard the Yamaha MusicCast 20 has more reserved bass than others, you might expect it to be smaller too. However, this speaker is larger than the Sonos One. Some of the basics of its look are similar, though. The speaker grille curves around the front and sides, building up to a lip that sits a little above the glossy plastic top plate. The Yamaha MusicCast 20 is available in black and white.

It will adapt to your living room well, though. Related: Best Bluetooth speakers. The Yamaha MusicCast 20 does not have a battery. This is a home speaker, not a portable one, but it does offer better flexibility than many in this class. Like almost all multi-room speakers, Wi-Fi is the main way to stream music to the Yamaha MusicCast However, you also get Bluetooth. You can also link specific sources to the three numbered buttons on the top.

After these are set, you can get going without touching your phone. As such, the Yamaha MusicCast 20 could easily replace a kitchen or bedside radio. These shortcuts are a great bonus feature. Some of these are integrated into the MusicCast app, but Spotify is not. This lets you delegate different channels of a surround sound mix to a multi-speaker MusicCast setup: no more speaker cable to worry about.

But in theory the AVR integration means audio and picture sync should be a non-issue. Large passive radiators sit on the sides. Big radiators like this can often result in surprisingly impressive bass for the cabinet volume. This driver arrangement also leaves the MusicCast 20 with a narrower sweet spot, because the highly positional treble information is only thrown out from the front.

However, one speaker on its own does not have competitive sound dispersal, or a particularly well-separated soundstage. All those criticisms aside, the Yamaha MusicCast 20 sounds perfectly good.Wireless speakers are on the rise. With the growing popularity of smart speakers, like the Amazon Echo and Google Homeand tons of great-sounding wireless speakers like the Sonos Onethe future of home audio is clearly wireless.

The latest entries into the list of MusicCast-enabled devices include the Yamaha MusicCast 20 reviewed here and more powerful MusicCast There are also three numbered buttons to assign favorite inputs, which is a handy feature for those that want to be able to juggle different inputs for the speaker.

Setting up the device is actually very easy. In general, the Yamaha MusicCast 20 speaker looks quite good. It's a bit bulkier than some other options, but still very manageable. One of the big selling points for these particular speakers is that they work with some new Yamaha receivers for surround sound. You can only use them with receivers as the rear surround speakers, however, and not the main ones.

While they're a bit limited, we actually quite liked using the speakers in a surround system — they sounded pretty good as surround speakers, and while it took us a minute to properly set them up considering you have to change the settings in both the app and on the receiver, once we did we found that they worked very well.

It was equally enjoyable using the speakers as a stereo pair. The main way in which we used these speakers was through AirPlay, and they work with AirPlay very well.

Thankfully, once speakers are paired or set up in a surround system through the Yamaha app, however, they do all play your music. While design and features are important enough, in the end this is a speaker so sound quality is perhaps the most important thing to consider. There seems to be quite a boost in the higher lows, helping deliver a real kick in things like kick drums, and a smooth bass guitar tone.

We found that despite being smaller, however, the Sonos One offers a little more in the low frequencies. The low mids are decently warm, while the high mids are present enough for most situations. We found that there seemed to be a slight cut to the high mids, giving things like vocals and guitars a slightly laid-back tone. Still, the bulk of the highs are relatively well-represented. Cymbals generally get plenty of body, while vocal sibilance helps the vocal cut through the mix a little more.

Ultimately, we like the sound of the Yamaha MusicCast Looking for a great-sounding smart speaker that works wirelessly and has a ton of features? Go for the Sonos One. That said, there are a few situations in which it might be a better choice. Ultimately, the Yamaha MusicCast 20 has a good sound-quality, nice design, and plays well with other Yamaha devices. Introducing MusicCast. What is MusicCast? Share Music In Every Room. Share Music In Every Room Imagine sharing all the music you love throughout the home — no matter the format.Last summer, Yamaha invited us to a small event in Los Angeles where the company unveiled its new vision for multiroom audio, MusicCast.

More recently, MusicCast has rolled out of the showroom and into living rooms, injected into several new pieces of Yamaha gear including the first dedicated MusicCast speaker, the WX We had a chance to spend some quality time with a pair of WXs, along with a Yamaha sound bar, creating a three-piece starter set for a would-be MusicCast arsenal. Is MusicCast ready for primetime? Though the name may be less than inspiring, the WX is crafted into a sleek capsule that pleases the eye as readily as it folds into the background of your chosen decor.

The speaker currently comes in two colors: jet black, or white with platinum accents. Sound performance in the upper register is clean and clear, if not a little bright in that signature Yamaha waywith a relatively decent punch of bass for the size. There are several connection options, including an optical digital input, HDMI input and outputs, an analog 3. That said, we wanted more detail and better resonance in the middle of the sound, especially when it comes to dialog, which gets a bit tinny at times.

Systems vary in their ease of entry. MusicCast sits somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Once the router is initiated, however, the system is pretty painless to get up and running. Although it can be a little hard to navigate at the onset, the MusicCast Controller app boasts some very intuitive features that separate it from the pack once you get going. Like any multiroom app, you can of course send sound to each speaker from the same source, or multiple sources, control the volume of each speaker independently, and name each individual zone.

But the MusicCast app also tacks on some pretty cool innovations. MusicCast proved virtually flawless at sending our favorite tunes to multiple speakers from streaming apps. You can also choose from a wide selection of stock photos to represent each zone, or even grab personal photos from your own library. That said, we did have a few minor issues over the course of a few weeks.

While the app is designed to allow you to power on each speaker from your phone, some were occasionally unresponsive, forcing us to power on the speaker manually First World problems.

We also had some trouble getting grouped speakers to play ball with Spotify at times: Since Spotify requires you to control devices through its own app, we were sometimes forced to bounce between apps to get volume to sync up with a new speaker group. Once all speakers were linked up properly, however, they held steady. However, that could easily be chalked up to network issues with our router. MusicCast proved virtually flawless at sending our favorite tunes to multiple speakers from streaming apps, with no audible delay, allowing us to walk from room to room engulfed in sonic bliss.

With few exceptions — including those mentioned in the app section above — we spent a very pleasant couple of weeks bouncing around the house as MusicCast filled the halls with sound. However, there are a few slight caveats that users coveting this cool feature will want to consider before buying in. This cropped up when we wanted to play the AFC Championship game from the YSP in the living room and also have it blasting in the kitchen, resulting in an echo effect fit for a Bowie space epic.

But if the company does want to add 5. That being said, even without digital delay, speakers separated by notable distances will incur their own delay through the natural physics of sound, making it much more effective to separate devices by a wall or two.

As MusicCast evolves, we hope Yamaha will address the hard-wired source delay in future updates to make the system even more versatile. Yamaha will have to keep improving on MusicCast if it wants to take on the king of multiroom head on — including adding 5. Previous Next. The best gaming speakers for 17 hours ago.
